With each Flat Aggie report, I’ll be putting together a list additional resources, websites, recipes, books, and activities. Use this with Flat Aggie’s report from the High Plains Journal.
Classroom Activities & Resources
Pick any farm commodity (corn, soybeans, wheat, apples, beef, pork, carrots, etc.) Ask students to identify how we consume these products. For example: wheat is the main ingredient in pizza crust, bread, crackers, cookies, etc. Now ask the students to identify the people needed to grow the wheat, harvest it, transport it to market, to the manufacturer, to the grocery store. Ask the students to create a chain linking these careers from farm to pizza place. They can create a chain online or by drawing pictures or just using words.
Get them started with this list: farmer, seed dealer, implement dealer, agronomist, truck driver, train conductor, barge operator, grain elevator manager, food scientist, farm broadcaster, meteorologist, graphic designer, advertiser, banker, grocery store manager, USDA inspector, pizza place owner, mechanic
