We are home from the Big Apple and My Farmer hasn’t missed a beat. In less than thirty minutes after pulling in the drive, he was changed and out the door, in the tractor, pushing dirt around on an old bin site. Does a farmer’s heart good to get back in a tractor after trusting his life to taxi drivers in the big city.
Tonight we head out with the harvest crew for a final “thank you” to everyone who helped make harvest happen here at the farm. My in-laws do this every year. Every person and family who made harvest happen is invited to dinner at a local restaurant. The group consists of the immediate farm family, grandparents, and neighbors, the guys who drove the auger cart or filled in on days in the semi, family friends, and sometimes random people – acquaintances – who sit down and join the group.
We take up a lot of space, eat a lot of great food and talk a lot about, what else, farming and harvest. This year I’m sure the conversation will focus a lot on the disappointing yields, but also celebrate the surprises we got in some fields. We’ll marvel at the fact that we are done already, as in done, done and I’m sure there will be several stories told about embarrassing mishaps that My Farmer neglected to share. I also always seem to learn about something my farm boy did while working in the fields, something that this farm mom probably won’t appreciate very much.
The harvest dinner is nice. It serves as our final farewell to another growing season and celebrates the people who are so important to our farm.
